The Eagle's View

We would like to share with you the beauty of MacGregor Orchard from the eagle’s perspective.

Most newcomers to the orchard do not realize there are 20 beautiful acres behind the market.

As you can see the orchard is shaped like the state of South Carolina or a heart depending on the eye of the beholder.  We definitely wanted to share with you!

I am so looking forward to peach season again!!!

The off-season at MacGregor Orchard is a very busy time.  We both have very long "To-Do" list.  We also use this time to do educational and training classes.  Thanks to our customers who stopped by the NC Apple Grower meeting in Asheville to just say 'Hello'.  MacGregor Orchard customers are the BEST!!!!! Stephens' list included tree pruning, mulching the pruned limbs, equipment maintenance, fence maintenance and the list goes on and on..... A farmers work is never done. We had a great holiday and I wanted to share a Christmas picture of the "Scottish" kitchen aprons modeled by Stephens and our youngest son, Walker.  I couldn't resist sharing it!

How to Keep Apple Cider and Apple Sauce Beyond The Apple Season

The Fall temperature is in the air and the leaves are changing!  It is a great time for sipping some MacGregor Orchard Apple Cider (cold or hot).  We will be offering both this weekend!  How do you keep the magic of apple cider around beyond the apple season, you ask?   First, you drink a cup (8 oz) of apple cider from the jug then you reseal the jug. Second, place the remaining amount in the jug in the freezer.  You can also freeze and thaw the jug several times over the course of  year.  You can also keep the delicious MacGregor Orchard Fresh Apple Sauce all year round!   If the apple sauce remains unopened in the original bag, the apple sauce will last for one year in the refrigerator.  It is an awesome way to enjoy it all year.  Thanks to Mr. Perdue's food science knowledge!

Honey Is Here

MacGregor Orchard’s bees have been busy and working hard. We pulled our second round of honey from the hives about 2 weeks ago and now we are stocked up again. We have 2lb and 1lb bottles, and 12oz Honey Bears available. It is as smooth and delicious as the first batch.

As you know our first honey offering was a delicious blossom flavor. This batch has more of a sourwood/blossom combination flavor.

Our neighbors stopped to pick up some more honey. They recommend it on pancakes, pies, and fingers! Yes, fingers…

We are still picking several of our late season peaches. Emmett enjoyed his first fresh peach at MacGregor Orchard last weekend. It was a beautiful sweet sight to see.

We have our NY-614 (powerful pear favor- yum!) and Seckel (Sugar) pears this weekend. Asian Pears are just around the corner! We are so excited.

Castleton Prunes

Castleton Prunes

We will have Cortland, Gala, Golden Supreme, Early Fuji and a limited supply of Honey Crisp apples. We plan to start making apple sauce and apple cider in the next week or so. We will let you know as soon as we start the press up!

We are still picking the Queen’s Fig, which is the larger variety. We also have smaller “Mystery” Figs. We have all come to know any “Mystery” varieties of fruits grown at this orchard are always a wonderfully delicious surprise.

We regret to say the late season plums (Damson & Elephant Hearts) did not do well this year and we are very sad. We will try again next year.

We have picked our Castleton Prunes. Our customers with European backgrounds have been making cakes and dumplings with the prune. I would love someone to share their recipe with me...

Our veggie offerings keep expanding! We're currently offering all of the following:

  • Bi-color corn

  • Cabbage

  • Eggplant

  • Sweet green and red peppers

  • Jalapeno peppers (Some like it Hot!)

  • Okra

  • Tomatoes

  • Roma tomatoes

  • Zucchini

  • Squash

  • Onions

  • Green beans

Overflowing With Fruit

starking-delicious-plum.jpg

The Orchard is in full swing and the fruit is flowing. We currently have our midseason peaches and they are as tasty as the early season peaches. We will start picking Georgia Belles this week, which is a white peach.

Nectarinesplums and prunes are also available. Yes, prunes! Prunes are not dried plums despite the common belief. Fresh prunes are amazing.  Plum varieties include BubblegumOzark Premier and Starking Delicious, which has beautiful red flesh. Apricots were damaged in the frost so they were only a handful and I am sorry to say that Julia ate them...

I have started picking some early Apples (Ginger Gold) but their quantities are low because of the late freeze this year. It’s hard to believe it's time to start picking apples, but it is exciting to see all these amazing flavors coming off the trees.

Standard Pears are getting close and we will start picking them in the next couple of weeks.

We continue to add more local vegetables (sweet yellow corn, okra,  tomatoeszucchinisquashonions). The delicious sweet blueberries and some new table grapes are from Happy Berry. We are also still enjoying sweet, juicy watermelons and cantaloupes.

Local Squash and Okra available at MacGregor Orchard

We prepare all our fresh fruit preserves here at the farm. The smell of cooking preserves has been waffling through the orchard. Not only do the fruit preserves smell delicious cooking but they taste amazing. We currently have peach, strawberry, blackberry, blueberry, nectarine and plum preserves. Strawberry/Rhubarb sauce is also available. Preserves and sauces are available in 8 oz and 16 oz sizes.

MacGregor Orchard Bees were busy this spring making a rich and beautiful blossom-flavored honey. We expect the next round of honey will have more of a sourwood flavor. We have honey in 1lb and 2lb jars, 1.5lb with comb, and 12 oz honey bears.

We are also featuring some beautiful hand-made pottery honey pots from Mud Dabbers Pottery.

Finally, our Glassy Mountain View Farm Black Angus is available. We have a variety of cuts of meats to select from at the orchard. The steak selection includes Ribeye, Filet Mignon, London Broil, NY strip, Hanger, Flank, Skirt, T-Bone and Sirloin. We also have ground beef, brisket and more. They are pasture-raised a mile away at our cattle farm.

Please call us at 864-320-2778 if you have any questions or if you would like us to reserve any products above.

We look forward to seeing you all soon and we thank you for your business in advance,
Stephens and Julia

New Owners

Hello from MacGregor Orchard!

Allow us to introduce ourselves! We are the new owners of MacGregor Orchard (formerly Perdeaux Fruit Farm). Our names are Stephens & Julia Gregory. We have two amazing sons, Dilland and Walker Gregory.

Stephens is a proud descendant of the MacGregor Clan in Scotland so we named the Orchard after his heritage. He has 30 years of experience working in agriculture and has always loved the outdoors and nature. We already own Glassy Mountain View Farm, where we raise Black Angus cattle and vegetables. It’s about a mile from the orchard.

We are thrilled we had the opportunity to purchase the farm from Dick Perdue. MacGregor Orchard will continue to make the delicious recipes you have come to love over the years. We are happy to say that Jill, Alyssa, and Frankie will continue working with us. They are truly a blessing!

As you all know Mr. Perdue is a wealth of knowledge and he will continue to bestow it upon us as an advisor for the next couple of years, so don’t be surprised to see him still around.

Since we have purchased the orchard we increased “nature’s” work force on the property by bringing 30 bee hives to full working order to help with pollination and to provide you with local honey.

As a family-owned orchard, we are proud to be able to share our hard work with you by raising a crop in which you can taste the love. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram to see photos and videos from the orchard.

We look forward to getting to know you and your family! It is honor to provide our products to you.

Thank you,
Stephens and Julia Gregory

2019 Fruit Crop Overview

  • Peaches & Nectarines: The crop is loaded this year and they look great.

  • Plums & Prunes: The crop is heavy and they look great. We lost very little to a late freeze.

  • Apples: We lost some fruit from late freeze but it was a good thinning for the trees. All in all the apples look good.

  • Pears & Asian Pears: The crop is heavy and looking good for both Asian and Standard.

  • Muscadines: The crop is just getting started but looks great.
